Search Tips

Given the overlap in the interests of the many organizations represented in the RAC's collections, a global search (across all collections) may be the most productive, even if you think that you are only interested in one collection.

Consult the collections currently in RFI document to ensure that you are searching for materials that are available in RFI.

Search results are not sorted or presented in any specific order. Results from the same collection may be separated by other records. Please review your search results carefully.

Do not search on broad terms, such as university, foundation, or Rockefeller.

Use AND, OR, NOT, and ( ) to narrow or broaden your search. For example:

nursing AND education [narrows search to records having both terms]
film OR moving image [broadens search to records having either term]
American Studies NOT Latin [narrows search to records having the first term but not the second]
(highway OR road) AND construction [retrieves records with either of the parenthetical terms and the term outside the parentheses]

Use an asterisk to search for varying forms of a word:

Agricultur* will search for agriculture, agricultural, etc.
Theat* will search for theater, theatre, theatrical, etc.
Transport* will search for transport, transporting, transportation, etc.

Searching for an institutional or personal name or for a grant recipient will be more productive than searching for general subject terms.

When searching for a personal name, join the first and last names together using AND to get the most results from your search. For example: Charles AND Johnson will retrieve records for Charles Johnson and Johnson, Charles.

You may see search results that do not contain your search term in the fields displayed on screen. This should not be considered a false search result. The search term does appear somewhere in the database record, but not in a field that is available in RFI.

To search on a date range, use "to" between the beginning and ending dates: for example, 1900 to 1950. Use an asterisk to search dates within a decade; for example, 186* returns results from 1860-1869.

When searching for country names in the Rockefeller Foundation Archives, search for the country's name and for its country code. The country codes correspond to the Series numbers in several Record Groups of this collection and are often used instead of the country's name. Consult the list of RF country codes to get the appropriate number for your search.
